Background: To tell Jaeha's story, it's necessary to know the founding story of the Kingdom of Kouka, in which Akatsuki no Yona takes place, first. Essentially, the red dragon god called King Hiryuu descended to the world of humans, taking on a human form himself. People at the time were evil, though, and after rejecting the demands of the other four dragons to get rid of said humans, the dragons decided - due to their love for Hiryuu - to give their blood to four human warriors. They helped Hiryuu to fight the evil in the land until Hiryuu's human form died. From this point on, the paths of the four dragons separated, creating the tribes of the land. They themselves went into hiding because of their special powers and the four dragons are waiting now for Hiryuu's return. The dragon blood gets passed down to different individuals through generations - but this comes with a heavy downside. The previous dragon starts to gradually lose their power and ultimately their life once the new dragon is born, causing most of them to not live particularly long.
Jaeha is the current green dragon, referred to as Ryokuryuu. The Ryokuryuu possesses the power of the dragon in their right leg. To avoid that the village gets attacked in pursuit of that power, the Ryokuryuu get chained in their room after they are born. The same goes for Jaeha. Additionally, Jaeha was supervised by Garou, the previous Ryokuryuu, who lived unnaturally long after Jaeha's birth. This fact made it especially hard for Jaeha to escape, as Garou would stop him every time, even going as far as abuse Jaeha and trying to rid him of all hope that the world outside would be any better. Still, this didn't change Jaeha's mind of wanting to escape and he finally managed to do it when he was 12. From then on he traveled the land until he met Gigan in Awa, who took up the task of raising him. Through her he comes to learn about the local fishermen who have become pirates to fight Awa's ruler, Kum-ji - and is widely accepted and welcomed by them, proving the things Garou had told him as wrong.
Life had been good for him until he senses the presence of the White and Blue Dragon. Assuming that they came for him, he tries to escape as much as possible, but is eventually found by Kija (the White Dragon/Hakuryuu) and unwillingly runs into Yona shortly afterwards because he was chasing Hak, whom he met earlier and wanted to turn him into a member of the pirates to fight Kum-Ji. His blood recognizes her as Hirryuu's successor and he can't really escape the fate of becoming interested in her, even if he rejects her when she asks him to join her group. Still, Yona is interested in joining the pirates' cause and has to pass a test by Gigan. Jaeha watches over her during this time and her bravery despite her weakness causes him to become even more interested in her. During the fight with Kum-Ji, Jaeha also becomes more comfortable around the other members of Yona's group and after the victory of the pirates and their following disbanding, Jaeha joins her.
Once the Yellow Dragon, Zeno, shows up, the four dragons are reunited. Together with Yoon, they end up forming a band of bandits called "The Dark Dragon and the Happy Hungry Bunch", which tries to protect the poor people from government officials or fight against invading kingdoms. They join various fights, and once they are in the Water Tribe, Jaeha visits the red light district and gets drugged. Around the same time, Jaeha comes to the realization that his longing for being by Yona's side becomes deeper and that he views her group now as his "home". Again, they end up joining the fight but things take a dramatic turn when they run into Suwon, as Hak starts to go on a rampage while Jaeha with the help of Kija and Yona tries to stop him.
Once things are somewhat settled there, they end up going to the borders of the Earth Tribe and meet a young boy named Kalgan, who felt slightly ill. While they take care of him and carry him back home, one dragon after the other with the exception of Zeno falls ill. During this time, enraged soldiers of the Kai Empire end up attacking villages. Hak goes out on his own to fight them, though the sick dragons follow him, but they start to get cut down one after the other until Zeno appears and outs his true powers - his immortality and the fact that he becomes stronger the more hurt he gets. He hands the Kai soldiers a defeat and lives to the relief of everyone.
Personality: "Eh? You say I'm abnormally beautiful?"
When you meet Jaeha on the streets, he exhibits an open and friendly behavior and it is easy for him to talk to strangers or make them talk about themselves. This could be seen with Hak, who rarely talks about himself and catches himself doing so when he talks with Jaeha. Jaeha is also quite confident, often referring to himself as beautiful and he is not above using his looks to gather information or customers, as can be seen when he flirts with girls in order to make Yoon's sale successful. Combined with his love for beauty, it's not beyond him to try and talk to or even hit on the ones he deems as beautiful. He also tries to smooth talk these people and such a trait obviously makes him a lover of women. He is even getting called a playboy or pervert by other characters for this trait. He also seems to have a need for attention, as he longs for people having more interest in him. When he really wants the attention from someone - or is interested in someone in particular, he becomes very persistent and claims himself that once he has a prey he won't let them escape. Hak learned this the hard way as Jaeha just wouldn't quit to get him join the pirates, even after Hak punched him. Instead, Jaeha seems to enjoy being beaten up by Hak, showing that he also possesses a quite masochistic side.
"Taking away someone's freedom is the ugliest thing one can do in this world. People like that ought to decay into dirt and come back as thorny roses."
Considering Jaeha's history, it's no wonder that his character values freedom to the extent he does. He tries to run away from the things that shackle him down - his duty, his village and it is very important to him that the things he does happen because he chooses to do so, not because he had no choice. This initially leads to him and Kija having a rather rough start of their relationship, as Kija represents basically everything he came to hate and Jaeha thinks of him as a puppet. This view changes overtime, however, and it interestingly leads to that Kija becomes the person Jaeha starts to confide in about his insecurities and worries. This can be considered a great step from Jaeha's side, as he has troubles with being honest - both with others and with himself. When the pirates tell him how happy they are that he is fighting by their side, he brushes it off, telling that he'd rather protect cute girls while actually being very happy about those words. A primary example for him being not honest with himself can be seen with his growing feelings for Yona - he denies them, blaming those feelings on the dragon's blood instead of acknowledging them as his own feelings. His need for freedom is also exposed in he fact that he says he doesn't want to be pursued and prefers being the pursuer himself. He also is no fan of authority and laws, and tends to get involved in this business as soon as girls are threatened. Additionally, he seems to be a bit afraid of the short lifespan that comes with being a dragon, as he worries about a new Hakuryuu being born in Kija's village when he collapsed, stating that they are around the age where the new ones are born.
"I do have to look out for them, after all."
The role Jaeha finds in the group (assuming he is the oldest) as the "most experienced one" can be best described as the role of a big brother. This is supported by the other characteristics he possesses. Jaeha is very observant and is most of the time able to read and analyze people rather well - for example he realizes that Hak and Suwon must have been close, just from Hak's reaction to the topic alone while others would assume that Hak must hate Suwon. His readings are not always right, though, as can be seen with Kija. When he finds out about Kija's scars, he assumes that Kija must be traumatized by them and doesn't want to come to the bath because of that instead of thinking of Kija's phobia of bugs. He also becomes more or less an advisor of the gang and tries to help them, as can be seen when he drops hints here and there for Yona to figure out Hak's feelings. However, he also uses his observations to tease the people around him and obviously has fun with this, viewing it as his special privilege as "the oldest" one.
He gets super protective of the others up to ridiculous lengths, best shown when he tries to shield Kija's scars from Hak, whom he even attacks with his throwing knives or when he protects Zeno from a bear despite knowing about the later's immortality. This trait also shows a bit of his hypocrisy, though, as he for example, scolds Kija for being too reckless in battles but he himself doesn't really do a good job of taking care of himself either, considering how willing he is to test-take drugs or unknown substances.
Alignment: Elios is the one I find most fitting for Jaeha, as a lot of his actions come either from loathing and disdain for something (like him running away from is fate) or from the affection that he holds for others.
Abilities: Dragon Sense - Jaeha can sense the presence and location of the other three dragons and is shown to notice Yona's presence as something "threatening", too.
Dragon Leg - As Ryokuryuu, Jaeha has inherited the Dragon Leg. With it, he's able to jump ridiculous heights and is able to quickly move between longer distances. Additionally, it seems to be stronger than your average leg, too, when it is used in a fight.
Blades - Jaeha is shown to be a capable fighter with throwing blades.
Music - Jaeha is shown to be able to play the ehru.
